Eating Healthy On A Budget, Can It Be Done? Are There Hidden Costs?

Fruits, vegetables, whole foods, natural foods, organic, GMO free, grass fed, free range, super foods, raw foods, seeds, nuts, clean water, alkaline water and everything else you can think of when eating healthy is mentioned. Can all this be done on a budget or low income? Are there hidden cost's? Should it be considered?

We have all walked into a grocery store to find all the choices available to you. The variety to choose from can be intimidating when not understood, especially when it comes to price. Where to start, in the fruits and vegetables section, the healthy section if you will or in the convenience processed food isles. Let's be honest, the choice is entirely yours to make and that choice will play a part in what you pay, both in the price of the food itself, the way it makes you feel, and another hidden cost you may not be aware of.

Now let's talk about price: is it a factor in what we choose to eat? Research shows several points to consider about junk food being much cheaper than whole food. Really? Many well written articles mentioned that junk food is cheaper than fresh whole food. How can this be and why does it not make sense to me? Stronger arguments were also made that the true price of junk food is actually much higher when taken the subsidies; our government pays to the farmers who grow this food, into account. An idea was mentioned, that would put mathematicians and economists in a room and have them figure out what all the junk food produced with subsidized crops should really cost if there were no subsidies. Then make retailers include the real price on the price tag along with the actual selling price. Maybe it's time to implement truth in pricing policies; to take out the mystery, that junk food, is actually cheaper than whole food?

Think about this, take the Twinkie for example, a food like substance with some kind of synthetic cream like substance inside, involving no fewer than 39 ingredient's, and those ingredient's must be grown somewhere, harvested, trucked to the plant, and this is only the first step. Once at the manufacture they must then be handled, blended, baked, packaged which also has ingredient's in the packaging itself and then shipped, again, to the store where the lucky recipient can make his or her purchase.

Now consider, say a bunch of carrots, a whole food that is good for you. What is involved with getting them to market? Yes they must be planted and cared for and then grown, harvested and washed off, and then trucked to the grocery store. There is also the cost of, are they organically grown or not. Pesticides also cost money. Compare 39 ingredients in a Twinkie, probably not all grown in the same spot, with a bunch of whole real food carrots, grown in one spot ready to go to market. Can you see that something is wrong with the price we pay?

Subsidies are hidden costs to the real price, we all pay, for the food we eat but it's not the biggest hidden cost of all. Here is another, I believe, that all this subsidized, pesticide laced, GMO altered food is really doing to our bodies, and that is making us sick? Take a look on the shelves of the medicine cabinet and in the draws and on the counter tops in your homes. Look at all that "prescription medication" could this also play a part in total cost of the food we eat? How about the doctor's visits for the high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and everything else with the food we eat? And let's not forget all the time off, being sick or for the doctors' visits could this also play a part in the total cost of that same food? Look at how much money is being spent after the fact, in an attempt to get well, from the food eaten in the first place?

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. Was quoted by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, in about 460 B.C. Isn't it time we returned to this advice, stop thinking that junk foods are cheaper, pay the price for the whole real foods we should be eating and use this amazing real food as the only medicine we really need, for in the long run, it really is all about the price we pay?

Today I am a living example of what whole foods can do for your fitness and lifestyle needs with the energy and the years younger look that is often commented upon, but it was not always that way. When my best friend was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease a few years ago, I decided to do something about it, What to do I was unsure of. Looking in the mirror convinced me that I to needed to work on myself as well. Out of shape, overweight, unhappy and depressed, I went to work not only on myself but started reading about nutrition, whole foods and the effects they have on your body and seeing if they could help my best friend.

Now as I write this I am a whole new person, 76 pounds released and more confident then ever and with knowledge and information about whole food that people need to know about. Unfortunately my friend has since passed but in his memory and honor I created a web site to help bring this knowledge to those who wish to use it. My web site is http://www.mymiracleoflifenetwork.com.

Have a look, see if this information would be helpful to you or someone you know. All the resources on my site gave me my life back and I believe can also play a part in your wellness plan for your mind, body and sole. Like me on face book at http://www.facebook.com/wholefoodmedicine

Cures For Arthritis

Arthritis

Arthritis is a term describing inflammation of the muscles, bones and joints. There are, in fact 200 different kinds of arthritis. The two most common types being osteo-arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteo-arthritis is a degenerative disorder resulting from wear and tear of the cartiledge in the joints.

If you suffer from osteo-arthritis you should reduce your intake of the following foods:-

Highly refined and processed foods

Saturated animal fats

Sugar and salt

You should increase your intake of:-

Wholegrain cereals

Fruit

Vegetables

Keep your weight down, as this can increase the risk of developing osteo-arthritis, increased weight puts strain on the joints, especially the knees and hips. Gentle exercise can also help, in the form of cycling, swimming or walking. However, don't over exert yourself, this can have the opposite effect.

Rheumatoid arthritis (although it can effect people of any age, tends to strike between the ages of 25-55). It is an inflammatory disorder in which the immune system turns on itself and starts to attack the joints. It is a progressive condition which commonly starts in the joints of the fingers and feet. This form of arthritis can often cause alternating attacks and remissions that can last for many years.

Foods to avoid when suffering from this form of arthritis are:-

Vegetable oils

Fatty beef and pork (and all red meat)

All milk & other dairy produce (but not goat or sheeps yoghurt)

Table salt

Vegetables such as peppers, aubergine, tomatoes, white potatoes

Iron supplements (may cause pain, swelling & joint destruction)

You should increase your intake of:-

Brown Rice

Green leafy vegetables and vegetables of every colour, including broccoli, peas, beetroot

Sulphur containing foods e.g. eggs, onions

Fresh pineapple (not dried or tinned) to help reduce inflammation

Apple cider vinegar

Supplementation with Vitamin E

Arthritis of all kinds can be brought on by many different things. Diet, as we have shown above plays a very important role in the onset and control of these disorders. However, many other factors can contribute to it, including:-

Stress

Food allergy or intolerance

Hormone imbalance

Malnutrition

Food intolerance can create symptoms such as fatigue, depression, headaches and constipation.

If you feel that a food allergy or intolerance may be the cause of your disorder pinpointing the culprit can be tricky. Evidence suggests that the most common culprits are:-

Cereals

Dairy products

Eggs

Wheat i.e. bread, pasta and any other foods containing wheat flour.

The best way to determine which foods are the main trigger is to follow an exclusion diet. Try eliminating the four main culprits above from your daily food intake for about eight weeks. You may experience a detox effect for the first 5-10 days which may make you feel terrible. This is perfectly normal, just persevere, the effects will pass.

If after that time you feel better, it is a promising sign that food allergy is the main culprit. To confirm this, however, try re-introducing each one of the above foods every two days. At the first sign of pain returning, you will have found your trigger food.

In a study carried out on rheumatoid arthritis sufferers who were given a fat free diet for seven weeks, the results reported a complete absence of symptoms. These symptoms only returned when animal and vegetable fats were re-introduced into their diet. Therefore try reducing your fat intake to 20-25 per cent.

For some sufferers of both rheumatoid and osteo-arthritis it has been discovered that fish oils can be helpful, as they have an anti-inflammatory effect on the joints. Try increasing your intake of fish high in omega 3 fatty acids such as herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout. It is suggested that these should be eaten two to three times per week for best results.

In addition to the above, Emu oil (which contains omega 3,6 and 9) can also have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects on the joints. However, be careful when sourcing your oil, as not all Emu oil is pure, and therefore will not have the required effect. If you purchase your Emu oil from Body Be Natural you can be assured that the oil is 100% pure Emu oil and is of the highest quality.

To prove just how significant Emu oil can be for arthritis sufferers a test was carried out at the Arthritis Clinic in Oklahoma, and results observed by the Doctor convinced him that this oil can make an impact on those suffering from athritis, and that the results were so impressive that he now recommends the use of Emu oil as part of his regular treatment program for patients.

Type 2 Diabetes - Will Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Help To Stabilize Your Diabetes?

Most people think the advice of "eat low GI and low GL foods, keep your insulin and blood sugar levels well known to you and your doctor, and exercise regularly" are all you can do to keep your Type 2 diabetes in check. And really, if those things were all you ever did, you would probably never experience any but the most mild symptoms of this problem. No longer is diabetes the terrible killer it once was, and hundreds of thousands of people will probably live to a reasonably healthy, ripe old age in spite of having it. However, there is one more thing you can do, that will actually have a seriously positive impact on your efforts to grow healthier.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Will Help Do The Trick: This thing (which is probably starting to sound like a big secret), is almost too easy. And while there have been few scientific studies proving it one way or the next, there is extensive anecdotal evidence that has come out of the middle-aged community (who frequently suffer from Type 2 diabetes), saying that it works. The trick is, buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and eat them as a normal part of your day. One way you can do this is to buy and use a pulverizer, then freeze the pulverized stuff that you aren't immediately going to use. While it might sound obvious that fresh fruits and vegetables keep you healthier than the canned stuff (to say nothing of all the synthetic garbage most people eat), too often knowing and doing are two different things.

Canned Vegetables: Believe it or not, there are tons of differences between canned vegetables and fresh ones. For one thing, the salt content of anything canned is likely to be far higher than that of fresh produce... cans are designed to last a long time if need be. But unless you're living in a fallout shelter in the aftermath of a nuclear attack, you really don't need to be indulging in (or maybe subjecting yourself to), the second-rate taste (and high levels of salt, lead and other impurities), which are common in canned veggies.

Fresh Is Best: You may have noticed lead made an appearance. It's just one of many things that tend to come out of countries with less stringent regulations on what can go in their gasoline. Keep in mind that what goes into the air eventually gets into the soil and plant life... and into you, if you eat it. You don't even need to buy "organic" produce, because there is no legal requirement for anything. Furthermore, there has never been a study saying that organic is better than normal growing techniques. But remember that fresh, properly washed fruits and veggies are the best for you and your Type 2 diabetes control.
