Eating Healthy On A Budget, Can It Be Done? Are There Hidden Costs?

Fruits, vegetables, whole foods, natural foods, organic, GMO free, grass fed, free range, super foods, raw foods, seeds, nuts, clean water, alkaline water and everything else you can think of when eating healthy is mentioned. Can all this be done on a budget or low income? Are there hidden cost's? Should it be considered?

We have all walked into a grocery store to find all the choices available to you. The variety to choose from can be intimidating when not understood, especially when it comes to price. Where to start, in the fruits and vegetables section, the healthy section if you will or in the convenience processed food isles. Let's be honest, the choice is entirely yours to make and that choice will play a part in what you pay, both in the price of the food itself, the way it makes you feel, and another hidden cost you may not be aware of.

Now let's talk about price: is it a factor in what we choose to eat? Research shows several points to consider about junk food being much cheaper than whole food. Really? Many well written articles mentioned that junk food is cheaper than fresh whole food. How can this be and why does it not make sense to me? Stronger arguments were also made that the true price of junk food is actually much higher when taken the subsidies; our government pays to the farmers who grow this food, into account. An idea was mentioned, that would put mathematicians and economists in a room and have them figure out what all the junk food produced with subsidized crops should really cost if there were no subsidies. Then make retailers include the real price on the price tag along with the actual selling price. Maybe it's time to implement truth in pricing policies; to take out the mystery, that junk food, is actually cheaper than whole food?

Think about this, take the Twinkie for example, a food like substance with some kind of synthetic cream like substance inside, involving no fewer than 39 ingredient's, and those ingredient's must be grown somewhere, harvested, trucked to the plant, and this is only the first step. Once at the manufacture they must then be handled, blended, baked, packaged which also has ingredient's in the packaging itself and then shipped, again, to the store where the lucky recipient can make his or her purchase.

Now consider, say a bunch of carrots, a whole food that is good for you. What is involved with getting them to market? Yes they must be planted and cared for and then grown, harvested and washed off, and then trucked to the grocery store. There is also the cost of, are they organically grown or not. Pesticides also cost money. Compare 39 ingredients in a Twinkie, probably not all grown in the same spot, with a bunch of whole real food carrots, grown in one spot ready to go to market. Can you see that something is wrong with the price we pay?

Subsidies are hidden costs to the real price, we all pay, for the food we eat but it's not the biggest hidden cost of all. Here is another, I believe, that all this subsidized, pesticide laced, GMO altered food is really doing to our bodies, and that is making us sick? Take a look on the shelves of the medicine cabinet and in the draws and on the counter tops in your homes. Look at all that "prescription medication" could this also play a part in total cost of the food we eat? How about the doctor's visits for the high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and everything else with the food we eat? And let's not forget all the time off, being sick or for the doctors' visits could this also play a part in the total cost of that same food? Look at how much money is being spent after the fact, in an attempt to get well, from the food eaten in the first place?

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. Was quoted by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, in about 460 B.C. Isn't it time we returned to this advice, stop thinking that junk foods are cheaper, pay the price for the whole real foods we should be eating and use this amazing real food as the only medicine we really need, for in the long run, it really is all about the price we pay?

Today I am a living example of what whole foods can do for your fitness and lifestyle needs with the energy and the years younger look that is often commented upon, but it was not always that way. When my best friend was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease a few years ago, I decided to do something about it, What to do I was unsure of. Looking in the mirror convinced me that I to needed to work on myself as well. Out of shape, overweight, unhappy and depressed, I went to work not only on myself but started reading about nutrition, whole foods and the effects they have on your body and seeing if they could help my best friend.

Now as I write this I am a whole new person, 76 pounds released and more confident then ever and with knowledge and information about whole food that people need to know about. Unfortunately my friend has since passed but in his memory and honor I created a web site to help bring this knowledge to those who wish to use it. My web site is http://www.mymiracleoflifenetwork.com.

Have a look, see if this information would be helpful to you or someone you know. All the resources on my site gave me my life back and I believe can also play a part in your wellness plan for your mind, body and sole. Like me on face book at http://www.facebook.com/wholefoodmedicine

Maintaining Proper Eye Care and Health

Our eyes are incredibly important and in the same respect are extremely fragile. Being so sensitive and exposed the eyes are more susceptible to damage than other parts of our bodies and require proper care and attention. That means protecting them from whatever life can throw at us. From remembering to take out your contacts to using an all natural eye gel instead of a chemically based on are all steps to take in order to ensure you have the healthiest eyes possible. Here are some tips on how to keep your eyes as healthy and youthful as possible.

1. Wear Sunglasses/Sun Screen

Ultraviolet radiation produced from the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer and signs of aging such like wrinkles and sun spots. The harsh light can damage the tissue of your eyes as well if you're not careful. Make sure to always apply a sun screen with an SPF of 40 or higher around the eyes (not in the eyes or the eye lids, but the surrounding area) and the whole body. For extra protection wear a pair of UV protective sunglasses at all times when in direct sunlight to aid in the prevention of fine lines and crow's feet.

2. Take Out Your Contacts

If anyone was ever going to take my advice on something this would be it. Please remember to take out your contacts every night and change them at required intervals as to avoid developing tumors and ulcers of the eye. If you don't take out your contacts proteins build up over the eye leading to ulcers. Years ago I forgot to take my contacts out and didn't pay much mind to them until one day I went to sleep with my contacts in and when I woke up I couldn't open my left eye because the smallest amount of light hurt beyond belief. I almost went entirely blind in that eye. I had a hole develop in my cornea that resulted in me not being able to wear contacts anymore. Also if you're applying an eye gel or facial cleanser take your contacts out first to avoid irritating them. So take out your contacts regularly, trust me it's no fun if you don't.

3. Eat Your Fruits and Veggies

Eating an antioxidant and vitamin rich diet is one of the best ways to promote good eye and overall health. Many of the best fruits and veggies that are rich in antioxidants are also rich in beta carotenes which are found in orange and red pigmented fruits and vegetables. Mangos, oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, red peppers, and cherries are just a few of the foods you can eat to for your eye health. Beta carotenes promote stronger eye function-ability and good eye sight.

4. Avoid Eye Gels Made With Chemicals

Only the best eye gels are made from the highest quality all natural ingredients that are effective without causing irritation to the skin. The skin surrounding the eyes is very thin and fragile and is more susceptible to damage than other parts of the body. It's important to avoid eye gels or creams that are made with harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances as many of these substances can cause skin irritation and severe allergic reactions. Temporary and permanent blindness as well as other eye complications have occurred in cases when a chemically based eye cream got into the eyes.

It's important to take the best care of our eyes as well as our bodies. Follow these easy to remember and important tips to have the best eye health possible. Remember to always take out your contacts and change them regularly as well as protecting your eyes as best you can from the sun with high quality sun block and sunglasses. Avoid eye gels with harsh chemicals and fragrances as to lessen the chances of allergic reaction or irritation. Make sure to eat plenty of fruits and veggies as to promote a healthy mind, body and healthy eyes.

Type 2 Diabetes - Will Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Help To Stabilize Your Diabetes?

Most people think the advice of "eat low GI and low GL foods, keep your insulin and blood sugar levels well known to you and your doctor, and exercise regularly" are all you can do to keep your Type 2 diabetes in check. And really, if those things were all you ever did, you would probably never experience any but the most mild symptoms of this problem. No longer is diabetes the terrible killer it once was, and hundreds of thousands of people will probably live to a reasonably healthy, ripe old age in spite of having it. However, there is one more thing you can do, that will actually have a seriously positive impact on your efforts to grow healthier.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Will Help Do The Trick: This thing (which is probably starting to sound like a big secret), is almost too easy. And while there have been few scientific studies proving it one way or the next, there is extensive anecdotal evidence that has come out of the middle-aged community (who frequently suffer from Type 2 diabetes), saying that it works. The trick is, buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and eat them as a normal part of your day. One way you can do this is to buy and use a pulverizer, then freeze the pulverized stuff that you aren't immediately going to use. While it might sound obvious that fresh fruits and vegetables keep you healthier than the canned stuff (to say nothing of all the synthetic garbage most people eat), too often knowing and doing are two different things.

Canned Vegetables: Believe it or not, there are tons of differences between canned vegetables and fresh ones. For one thing, the salt content of anything canned is likely to be far higher than that of fresh produce... cans are designed to last a long time if need be. But unless you're living in a fallout shelter in the aftermath of a nuclear attack, you really don't need to be indulging in (or maybe subjecting yourself to), the second-rate taste (and high levels of salt, lead and other impurities), which are common in canned veggies.

Fresh Is Best: You may have noticed lead made an appearance. It's just one of many things that tend to come out of countries with less stringent regulations on what can go in their gasoline. Keep in mind that what goes into the air eventually gets into the soil and plant life... and into you, if you eat it. You don't even need to buy "organic" produce, because there is no legal requirement for anything. Furthermore, there has never been a study saying that organic is better than normal growing techniques. But remember that fresh, properly washed fruits and veggies are the best for you and your Type 2 diabetes control.
