I'm So Sad and Lonely! 10 Ways to Dispel Those Winter Office Blues

Winter can be a wholly depressing season, if, you let it affect you in that way. The short days and long, dark cold nights can psychologically affect the most cheerful of us. Lots more people are driving to work in longer queues and with some poor driving as people struggle to cope with the wintry conditions; stress levels are raised. Not the most auspicious of starts to the day then for those unfortunate enough to have to endure the race track mentality of the motorised masses.

Public transport is improving, but not to the point where you feel your personal space isn't being invaded by a myriad of strangers, and some with bathing regimes not quite inline with the rest of us shall we say!

Is it not surprising then that having arrived stressed, our offices seldom seem like the required oases of calm in the busy maelstrom of life? The very place where we need to concentrate and organise our thoughts for a productive and hopefully enjoyable day (or night) ahead, can exacerbate the stresses built on the trip into work. Our office furniture can be drab and uncomfortable, cluttered desks and dust laden office chairs. Just to make matters worse, British summertime officially ends and we are all travelling home in the dark after the clocks are moved back an hour.

But, things do not have to be this way!

Here are ten great tips to make winter in your office seem like the first day of spring - well almost!

Try and remove clutter to give a more organised and pleasing-to-the-eye general office appearance. A cluttered office can give the impression of slovenliness but can also be the product of an overworked employee. Immediately you approach your workstation the apparent stresses of a busy day are staring you right in the face, so put that right and your mindset is changed for the good.

Have localised lighting like desk lamps to minimise the effects of SAD (Seasonally Adjusted Disorder). Also known as the winter blues or winter depression, it seems as though the Seasonally Adjusted Disorder Association (SADA) have attributed just about every known symptom from irritability to loss of libido to the winter blues. SADA say a light box of up to ten times the intensity of a domestic light bulb (that is 2500 lux for the techies amongst you) for several hours a day is recommended. Assuming you are not a chronic SAD sufferer a good desk lamp will help.

Enliven your personal work space with boldly coloured winter flowers - try a Christmas cactus or a begonia.A bonsai tree can be great for distressing whilst pruning and providing some much-needed greenery to an otherwise bland office desk.

Spring clean your workstation, dust and vacuum your keyboard, get the screen wipes out from the back of the drawer and... use them. It is amazing how much more comfortable you feel working with clean and fresh smelling equipment. I liken it to cleaning my car, I kind of fall in love with driving it again when it's been given a good clean.

Have the office lighting serviced. Faulty lamps should be replaced, reflectors cleaned and diffusers cleared of all debris like insects and dust.

Play some light background musicfor one or two hours a day. It must be to everyone's taste though - lift music is definitely a no-no.

Change your computer screen wallpaperto something bright and breezy, maybe a favourite holiday shot or a pet in a sunny setting.

Brighten up your office with some vibrantly coloured office chairs and notice boards. If your office furniture is looking tired, why not treat yourself or your staff to a new task chair and some colour co-ordinated accessories like waste paper baskets and in-trays.

Get an executive office toy like a stress ball or a 3D puzzle that everyone could try. We have several lying around; they're great for office banter. The Rubik's cube has recently made a comeback after all!

Have a dress down day. Pink tights or yellow shirt day, it is all good for office relations and lightening the mood and maybe a charity might benefit in some way?

So then my friend, there is no reason why the onset of daylight saving should condemn our modern office or control room workers to a gloomy winter of discontent. Not everyone enjoys going to work, but why not make it as pleasant as possible and convert your workplace into a light serene haven and you will return home and find yourself in a much better place
