Should You Use Curse Words When Doing Eft?
Many people who practice Emotional Freedom Technique have asked why would any practitioner ever use curse words or vulgarity when working with a group or an individual. The answer is actually quite simple. It works! It actually makes EFT more effective because it brings up people's negative emotions better than anything else and that's exactly what we want to do when we're doing EFT.
You see, I'm a strong advocate of having my clients fully feel their feelings when doing EFT. Otherwise, it's almost impossible to truly access their deepest feelings and therefore, its impossible to eliminate their negative feelings and self-limiting beliefs - which is the whole point of doing EFT in the first place. Let me explain further.
For those who aren't completely familiar yet with EFT and how or why it works, here's a thumbnail sketch. Its based upon a simple principle that when the body's meridians are blocked, it results in negative thoughts, self-limiting beliefs and pain. Secondly, when we use EFT, we are effectively breaking those very blockages that exist by tapping on each meridian access point, just as if we were tapping the top of a plastic straw with a little milk left in the middle of it to break the blockage formed by the milk.
In fact, when the meridian (straw) is fully blocked and it is tapped upon, it then breaks the blockage. So, we actually want to have the fullest blockage we can attain, in order to get the biggest release from blockage available.
That leaves the question open: How do we get the biggest blockage available? Glad you asked. Since the blockage is caused by negativity and vice versa, we get the biggest blockage when we feel the greatest negativity. We do that by saying things negatively and the more negative we are (i.e. cursing and swearing) the greater the blockage that will occur in the meridians. The same holds true when you scream the words loudly or with great emotion. All of those things will cause the meridians to become that much more blocked and that means when we subsequently tap on the meridian access points, the client gets that much more of a release from their negative thoughts, etc.
So my advice is to lead the client to curse and swear loudly and expressively whenever the issue is anger, frustration and the like and they will really feel those emotions that much more. Once they feel them fully - while they are tapping - the emotions will dissipate quite quickly and more completely than if they left them out and just said the words quietly or in a dead pan fashion.
By using more expressive words, loudly repeated and infusing everything with lots of emotion, the meridians get more blocked than normal and as the person taps on each meridian access point, it dislodges the blockages more effectively than if such words were not used.
CAUTION: Of course, you must not think this gives you license to use vulgarity just for the sake of being controversial or outrageous. Instead, see curse words as a way of helping the client better access their negative emotions so they can tap them away. In fact, one way to try them out ahead of time is to use them yourself while you tap and see if the tapping works better for you with these type of words than without them. That will give you a better insight as to how and when to use them - if you wish to use them at all.
If you feel it's not professional to use curse words, then don't use them. If you feel you'd like to try them just a little, as I said, try them on yourself first and the, if successful, start off very slowly with others using somewhat innocuous words and see if you find that your clients benefit more fully from using them than not using them. If they don't benefit, then stop and go back to what you did originally. Of course, if you're already getting great results all the time, then disregard this completely. Otherwise, consider giving it a try.
It has been my experience over the last 12 years that I've developed it, that it does work, especially with anger, hatred and rage in particular and people get better results. It also works great in groups. People seem to get a real kick out of yelling curse words openly without judgment coming back at them. It appears to be somewhat freeing and exhilarating to many. Most of all, it appears to help them access the anger and negative feelings they have within them better than any other approach.
Good luck with it.
