6 Tips to Aging Gracefully

1. Acceptance - Getting older is a fact of life and it is easy to spend your days wishing that you were still young, that you didn't have as many wrinkles and that your body didn't have as many aches and pains. However, until you accept who you are today (including the wrinkles, aches and pains) than you won't truly be able to be happy with where you are. Acceptance of who you are and where you are at in your life is key to aging gracefully.

2. Have a purpose - As we get older our purpose changes. The kids are grown and out of the house. Climbing to the top in our career is no longer important. Many baby boomers have a difficult time adjusting to this stage in their lives. It is much easier to make this adjustment by finding your purpose. Your purpose will have changed from your younger days but it is important to still define it. It is easier to be happy and get up each day knowing that we are still important in the lives of others.
3. Keep moving - You are not chasing the kids anymore and you may not live near the grandchildren who would keep you active. It is harder to stay active as we age because it is easier to listen to the excuses. "I am too tired, it hurts to walk too far, I am too old." Quit making the excuses, quit listening to your inner whining and make an effort to keep moving. My aerobics instructor is always having us work on balance. She is constantly telling us that "if we don't use it, we will lose it." This is so true. If you don't keep moving through all of the excuses, one day you will wake up and literally not be able to do the things you wish you could.
4. Sharing - You have a ton of knowledge and wisdom to share with younger generations. Don't feel like they are not interested, because they are. Take the time to mentor those younger than you or just to share your stories. You can do this through local school programs, churches and business organizations such as SCORE. Volunteer your time to help local non-profit organizations. There are so many places that can use your help. You will be amazed at how good you will feel by helping others.
5. Eat right - So many of our ailments can be eliminated or completely avoided by eating the proper foods. This is difficult to do sometimes in today's world of overly processed, hormone injected foods. The easiest way to incorporate a healthier diet is to eat at home as much as possible. This gives you more control over your portion sizes and eliminates a lot of hidden ingredients in your meals. When grocery shopping stay to the outer edges of the store. This is where you will find whole foods that are not overly processed. Try to buy organic produce and meats when possible.
6. Be friendly - When you are friendly to others you will not only make somebody else's day better, you will also feel better yourself. Your age does not entitle you to anything other than the wisdom and knowledge you have learned over the years. It is much easier to feel good about your day and your life when you are helpful to those around you and you treat them with a smile.
