How Acupuncture Treats Pain

Most Americans are familiar with acupuncture and know that it can help pain. Perhaps it makes no sense to you and you would like to know how it works.

Acupuncture increases circulation. When you have pain in your elbow for example, that means there is a "blockage" in your elbow. Your body no longer has a good blood flow to that area. Things get "stuck", your body cannot heal itself because the energy is stuck in that area. Your body needs to have good circulation to heal. With adequate blood flow and good general health, your body heals itself all the time.

To treat pain, we first determine what meridian is affected. You have energy meridians on your body that your body uses to circulate energy. You can look at them as "energy highways". When a meridian is "blocked", there is no circulation there and you have pain.

All you have to do is unblock the flow of energy and the body will heal itself. That is why acupuncture is so effective in treating pain. We choose the meridian that is affected and do specific points that affect that meridian. The acupuncture stimulates the key points on the meridian and opens up circulation again.

Acupuncture relieves muscles spasms. If you put a needle into a muscle that is spasming, within 20 to 30 minutes, the muscle will stop spasming. Massage can be effective also, but it is hard for someone to hold a point on your for 20 to 30 minutes.
